Beginning Counseling

A Clear Path Forward

What Your First Session Is Like

Begin by calling or emailing HOPE with a brief description of what you are looking for. A therapist will contact you within 48 hours, Monday through Friday, to help clarify the next step. Before your first session, you will complete new client forms and can ask questions about what to expect. Your first session can take place at our Roseville office or by secure video while you are located in California. The conversation begins with what matters to you, without requiring you to have everything figured out. You and your therapist can start identifying personal goals and working toward your own definition of success.

Affordable by Design

HOPE Counseling Center has been a non-profit organization since 2008. The practice was created to make quality mental health services more accessible and affordable while also helping develop the next generation of skilled, compassionate clinicians. Affordability is part of how the practice was designed, not a separate program or a promise about any particular fee. We will review current fees with you before your first session so you know what to expect before beginning care. You also have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate explaining the expected cost of care. The Fees page provides clear information about that right.

Learn About Your Good Faith Estimate

Supervised Care From a Growing Team

The HOPE team includes a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, registered associates and marriage and family therapist trainees. Every associate and trainee works with licensed clinical supervision, and each therapist profile states the clinician's exact title and supervision relationship. For clients, this means care comes from a therapist who is also supported through reflection, ethical decision-making and skill development. Wendy Barillas, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist #133716, serves as a clinical supervisor, including for HOPE's trainees. The team shares a commitment to compassionate, collaborative care while bringing different experiences, approaches and areas of focus to the counseling relationship.

You Are Not Alone

You Might Be Closer to One of These Stories Than You Think.

Illustrative story, not a real client

You and Marcus used to talk for hours. Now most conversations drift toward the same argument about money, chores or whose family gets the holidays, and it ends with one of you in the other room. You still love each other. You just are not sure how to get back to being on the same side. Couples counseling at HOPE gives you both a calm, neutral place to slow the pattern down and practice new ways to listen and repair.

These are fictitious names and scenarios used only to illustrate real-life situations.

Will You Be in California During Your Sessions?

Wonderful. Sessions take place by secure video, from home or anywhere private in California, for individuals, couples and families.

Our therapists practice under California law, so we can only see clients who are located in California during sessions. You deserve support wherever you are: the Psychology Today directory lets you search for a therapist licensed where you live. If you will be back in California, we would be glad to hear from you then.
