Trauma-Informed Approach
EMDR is one approach Wendy and Sarah use to support clients working with painful past experiences.

01
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a structured therapy approach used in work with distressing experiences. At HOPE, Wendy Barillas and Sarah Hausmann use EMDR as one option within individualized counseling. It is not the only way our therapists work with trauma or painful experiences.
Before beginning EMDR work, the therapist explains the process, talks with you about readiness, and discusses how the approach relates to your goals. That conversation matters because trauma-informed care includes collaboration, choice, and attention to the pace that feels manageable for the client.
Wendy's work includes trauma and attachment wounds, childhood and relational experiences, abuse, neglect, sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and emotional dysregulation. Sarah draws from psychodynamic influences and parts work, places a strong emphasis on rapport, and is trained in EMDR.
02
An EMDR session may include identifying a memory or concern, noticing related thoughts, emotions, and body sensations, and using guided bilateral stimulation. Your therapist will explain each part rather than expecting you to know the process in advance.
You can ask questions, pause, or discuss another approach at any time. The work is held within the broader counseling relationship and the goals you set with your therapist. EMDR is not a requirement for receiving trauma-informed counseling at HOPE.
03
No single approach defines counseling at HOPE. Our therapists work collaboratively, learn about the person and concern in front of them, and shape care around individual goals. An approach may be one part of the work, and you can ask questions or discuss another direction at any time.
The therapeutic relationship remains central. Your therapist will explain what they are inviting you to do, listen to your response, and respect your pace. You do not need to arrive knowing which method you want. Therapist profiles can help, or call or email us and we will help you find a good starting point.
HOPE offers counseling in person in Roseville and by secure video when the client is physically located in California. When you reach out, you can name an interest in a particular approach or simply describe what you would like support with.
