Ways to Meet
Counseling Online or in Person: Choosing What Fits
HOPE offers counseling at our Roseville office and by secure video anywhere in California. Here is how to think through which one suits you.

01
Both Options Are Real Counseling
If you are deciding between meeting online and meeting in person, the short answer is that neither is the lesser option. At HOPE, you can see a therapist at our Roseville office or by secure video from a private place anywhere in California, and the same collaborative, individualized approach carries into both. The right choice is usually the one that makes it easiest for you to show up and speak openly.
That choice often has more to do with your life than with counseling itself. Some people focus better away from home, in a room set aside for the work. Others feel more at ease in familiar surroundings, or find that skipping the drive is what makes starting possible. Either way, the relationship you build with your therapist is what matters most, and it can grow in either setting.
02
What the Roseville Office Offers
Our office is at 2540 Douglas Blvd., Suite 200, in Roseville, and the rooms are meant to feel calm and private. One counseling room has a soft blue couch and warm light, another has a deep sofa and a desk lamp, and a reading corner holds a full bookcase and a blue armchair. For some people, walking into a space like that draws a clear line between everyday life and the time set aside for counseling.
Meeting in person can also suit you if home is busy, shared or not very private, or if you simply think more clearly face to face. The office has two children's rooms as well: one with a play kitchen and toy shelves, and one with a purple sofa and shelves of toys and games for children, teens and families.
03
What Secure Video Offers
Secure video lets you meet with a HOPE therapist from home or another private place without traveling to the office. That can make counseling easier to fit into a full week, and some people find it easier to open up in their own space. You are still having a real conversation with a real person, and your therapist can learn what matters to you, notice patterns and work toward goals with you.
Privacy is the main thing to plan for. Choose a spot where you will not be overheard and can talk without holding back, such as a room with a door you can close or a parked car. Headphones can help. If privacy at home is hard to find, mention it to your therapist, since it may be a reason to meet at the office instead.

The California Rule for Every Session
There is one firm requirement for online counseling at HOPE: you must be physically located in California during each session. Our therapists practice under California law, so the rule applies every time you meet, not only when you begin. Living in California is not quite enough by itself. What counts is where you are at the moment the session takes place.
If you travel for work, visit family out of state, or split time between places, plan ahead and talk with your therapist about any session that would fall while you are away. If you live outside California, a directory such as Psychology Today can point you toward therapists licensed in your state. If you are only away for a while, you are welcome to reach out once you are back.
05
Children, Families and Couples
For children, the format deserves some thought. Younger children often express themselves through play, and HOPE's two children's rooms are set up for that kind of connection. Teens may have their own feelings about talking from home versus coming in. When you reach out for a child or teen, the therapist can talk with you about which format makes sense and how parents and caregivers fit into the work.
Family counseling by secure video is possible when everyone receiving care is located in California during the session. Couples can meet together at the Roseville office or by secure video, and partners can talk with the therapist about how they will join. In every case, each person taking part should be somewhere private enough to speak openly.

Questions to Bring When You Reach Out
You do not need to have the format settled before you contact us, but a few questions can help you think it through. Where would I have the most privacy? Will I be in California for every session? Is the drive to Roseville manageable right now? Would my child, partner or family feel more at ease in a room together? Is there a particular therapist I hope to see?
When you call 916-757-3030, email info@hope-counselingcenter.org, or use the form on our Work With Us page, mention whether you lean toward the Roseville office or secure video, and ask which formats are available with the therapist you are interested in. If you would like counseling in Spanish, ask for Wendy Barillas, our Executive Director and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.
More About This
Whichever you choose, it is fine to begin with the option that feels most doable today and to talk with your therapist later if your needs change. A therapist will contact you within 48 hours, Monday through Friday, to help with the next step.
